Spiral Living
Ever heard the expression, "come full circle"?
Of course you have. This is an interesting idiom because we all feel we go in and out of the same routine: days, weeks, years; mood swings, job lulls, Christmases, and even hygiene. Now I'm going to be contradictory and say this: I believe life is more like a spiral than a circle. We are never truly in the same place, even though things seem same-y.
Take the hygiene example. We shower, get ready for the day, get dirty during the day, shower again. But each day, our dirtiness is due to something else, our shower is hotter or colder, relaxing or quick. I don't know about you, but there are a lot of variables that hinder us from coming full circle.
Why are you even saying this, Sal? Firstly, because it's the end of another week, and I'm exhaustedly writing something almost nonsensical. Secondly (the real reason), is because this week includes another bout of performance doubt.
Happy Beginnings
~~~~*Drumroll Please* ~~~~
I got my first gig in Cardiff! Tommy, Chao (pianist) and I prepared some jazz and musical theatre pieces to perform at the Red Hot World Buffet. Aside from earning my first payment in pounds (£), we also got to eat food from said buffet. Finally, my loves of food, money and music merge into a fantastic evening!
Helping Tommy
This week incurred another slew of delicious dishes. Tommy is working on a 30 minute presentation for his jazz class, and I have been appointed his native-english-speaker-extraordinaire. I come home to delicious food, then I work through his sentences and ideas. Easy.
Actually, it's been really hard. Each day, I've been working late at College, trying to keep up my fitness and singing practice. I get home fatigued, and must make sense of a lot of jazz jargon. Hard knock life! But then Tommy creates new, irresistible combinations of food. Like so:
Drama Queen Strikes Again
Sal loves being a drama queen. Sal also loves denying that fact. I race into the kitchen, and moan, "Tommy!!!" He asks if I'm going to cry again. We have a chat about careers, life and fate, and I say…. "Stop, Tommy; I need to sing a song!"
I sing "Astonishing", and before long, I'm all smiles. He responds, "You say you don't want to do musical theatre, and yet you can't stop singing!"
Of course he's right. I don't know why I fight this path so much, but it's obviously for me. He calls me "Drama Queen" and notes how telltale my facial expressions are. He knows when I'm happy, sad (differs from pretending to be sad), and even when I'm hungry. What's a girl to do?!?!
Sing, I guess.
Throughout the Doubts...
...I've had some really great moments. We have a new Tutor, Bruce, who I have grown to love in four days. Although his name rhymes with Puce and Deuce, it also rhymes with Truce. He makes me Loose, and in class I conduct myself a la goose. Drinking coffee makes me even more effus(ive).
Enough of that.
He says, "If I wasn't a director, I'd have done psychology." Everyone's like, "Sal did Psychology!" He says, "Our job is to take dehydrated ink from a page and make an audience feel." I'm like, "I love your linguistic choices!"
He sets us homework where we have to read a script about 10 times and handwrite lines each time. BEST FRIENDS FOREVER I LOVE MY HANDWRITING (hint of sarcasm)!
After an intense workout and bike ride today, I loved discovering this text. Tommy's presentation gets good reports from his teacher, and I get rewarded!
After forcing…. I mean coercing Alice to workout/stretch/leap heaps, I get rewarded with this nice little message!
Fully Spiralled, Bro.
