Storm Achievement Unlocked
Pissing Down Rain
Excuse the expression, but it's pretty adequate for the weather we've been getting here in DC. We've sweltered under a bog of humidity, cursing the heat for days until the brewed storm was ready to strike down. Hammer and I have had a wonderful time; most days he'd be too hot to walk, and so I'm tethered to him, with him panting under a tree and me wishing I'd changed out of my jammies.
The rain comes in rushes, spitting down as if the sky finally lost control and broke down under pressure. On the receiving end, we rush to cover and fling open windows, hoping the storm could bring a whiff of fresh cool breezes. We gaze in awe at how a storm can stop us in our tracks, but also are glad for the heat, making our puddle splashing entrances into nature with heightened senses of abandon.
Throughout this weather, a storm of opportunity has arisen in my own life. Receiving texts about dogsitting duties, calls about teaching opportunities, and emails about my personal businesses has made me rejuvenated. Rather than feeling bogged down by it, I have a greater urgency and commitment to my life.
Thunder Drumroll
I have two very exciting things to announce; drumroll please!
...
I have become a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant!
What does this mean and what is Mary Kay? It's a skin care company, focused on bolstering women by creating a variety beauty regimes for consumers and a host of opportunities for employees. Working independently, I am able to plan parties around my personal schedule, bringing women together to demo our products and have an easygoing time. We have everything from daily facial routines to fragrances, and I can imagine a return to my sleepover days, sharing laughs and beauty tips among my friends as we pamper ourselves.
"Sally, I'm confused. This is just so out of the blue!" says my concerned boyfriend.
Well, it's true that I'm an outdoors-loving, makeup-defying, theatre-obsessed maniac. I try to spend my free time engaging with different plays and musicals, learning new repertoire and practicing my craft. I also understand that appearance is a huge part of being a performer and is something I don't actively cultivate. With Mary Kay propelling me, I hope to amend this aspect of myself and come out a stronger individual. Send me an email if you're at all curious! I'd love some friendly ears and encouragement in this endeavour.

Second drumroll, please!
...
I have been cast. Yes, your girl who has been attending audition after audition has landed her first DC stage role this year! It's been a treacherous journey, and I'm sure I've taken my anxiety out on you, one and all. Well, now we get to celebrate! I've been cast in an extremely thought-provoking and poignant production, investigating the holes in our incarceration system. I know. It's not Funny Girl, it's not South Pacific, but something so true and so ignored in our psyches. It highlights the problems our justice system faces, and it begs the audience to think of alternatives, no, to demand alternatives for our current system.
It is gritty and gruesome, and it makes me extremely nervous to be in such an edgy production. But I cannot let this opportunity pass me by. This is how theatre can become much more than entertainment; this is why I gnash my teeth and pursue this career. I want social justice, and I want to initiate thought and change through my art.
You can read about the company, The Conciliation Project, here.
Anything Else?
Yes, yes there is. I'm making some updates to my website, and I need your help. Do you mind sending me a message (doesn't matter how silly) through the "contact" page? I want to test the feature!
While you're there, you can also check out my beautiful face in all the photos. LOL.
