Bite Write: the food blog

Maybe if I changed my blog to be about food, more people would be able to relate. Ever tasted a burger with freshly chopped veg, sweet chilli jam and white cheddar cheese, melted to perfection? How about a bowl of crunchy nut cereal, topped with a cool dose of milk and blueberries? What do you think of a warm pecan pie with a healthy dollop of whipped cream to top off your summer nights?

As I currently curse my grumbling stomach, I assure you that my love of food is vast and fierce. If there's anything I am true blue through and through, it is a glutton.

And I don't even eat nice things. I can't remember the last time I had a fancy burger. The crunchy nut would've been 2-3 months ago, and pecan pie 2-3 years ago! Someone help a sister out!

On the plus side, my food endeavours haven't been too shabby this past week. I got to Thursday and I thought, dang, I've been vegetarian all week. That's what the warm weather does to you; suddenly, a salad with vibrant colours and cous cous is enough to fill you during the day. The idea of a sloppy pie or heavy steak just. ew.

But I'm a glutton, so I'll won't Not eat steak if you offer it to me.

I spent a few days in London this past week, and waiting for my coach home, I decided to venture around a place I knew not well. I stumbled upon this authentic italian sandwich place, you know the type where all the imported goods line the walls and the cheeses look so rich and wonderful. My sandwich (sorry, I just couldn't do the salami option, even though I'm sure it would've been good to you meat-lovers), was a basic but beautiful avocado, mozzarella and tomato sandwich, toasted and drizzled with olive oil and a bit of pepper. And then I asked the server, "what's your favourite dessert?"

He led me away from the delicious gelato freezer and towards a fridge of wonderfully presented desserts. He explained to me, "Gelati is no dessert. Gelati is gelati. Dis is dessert! Trust me, you don' get des in Virginia!" And golly gee wiz, he was right. What had he led me to, but a beautiful ricotta and cream cannoli with orange zest, lined with milk chocolate and dusted with powdered sugar.

Did someone say they prefer savoury to sweet? Go away, don't look at my cannoli. Don't envy my stomach which has processed such decadence.

Reason Number 1 for not being a food blogger: incapacity to capture how awesome the food actually is.

Creative Insight

Perhaps I'll ditch the food thing then, and be a Pinterest-type who's just so freaking crafty! I could write pinterest articles about how to lose weight while simultaneously achieving zen, or the latest and greatest fashion Pinspiration! Yes, please!

Well, my latest and greatest trial (and possible error) of creation are my now two-toned oxfords. I never seemed to wear them beforehand, because the all over grey colour was a bit dull. I did a bit of research into dyeing leather and... here you have it: the outcome to my creative output:

Yes, the right foot is definitely dyed a deeper pink than the left. Go figure. #homemade #cuteimperfections

Well, this too, I think I've failed. I wore these to my latest rehearsal with James and he was like, "I'm not sure if I like the grey, maybe the shoelaces could be black..." oh man. Getting fashion advice from James is like agreeing to let me cook the lasagna.

When +shijie xu agreed to let me cook the lasagna.
You:  So... what Can you do, Sal?

Me:  Sing and dance. Really important life skills, I know!

Why Singing and Dancing are Really Important Life Skills

1. You're on your feet.

meaning you're going to lose more calories (than when sitting); ergo, your Fitspiration aspirations are more easily achieved!!!

2. People like you.

no joke, I have so many people approach me simply because they've heard me sing. It not only is attention-holding, it also shows a bit of who you are and people trust you more readily.

3. You allow yourself to have fun.

okay, let's be serious here, I treat my singing and dancing so seriously that sometimes it doesn't seem like I'm having fun, but gosh, it is the most fun ever. I'm not sure if it's the years of training with Mrs. Haddad, but whenever I dance, there is usually a transfixed smile on my face.

4. You become okay with yourself.

When dancing and singing professionally, it no longer is a case of "I don't like how I sound/look"; it is a case of "How can I achieve that sound/look". You get used to the way you are and lose the self-deprecation that can often be coupled when people see their reflections.

5. There is an outlet to your energy.

Whenever I'm having a bad day, I usually right it by belting out something beautiful and honing my skills. I use music to regulate my emotions; I use dance to engage and liven my body. I realise that at the end of the day, it is me and only me who can right an emotional upheaval.

No more of that. Here, have a photo of me in a zorb!

Oh, and a picture of me with Andrew Machin, smiler extraordinaire!

First time in EVER that he's agreed to go out.

We ended up at our usual haunt, The Walkabout (aussie inspired, whatttttt), so here, have a photo of me doing a selfie in a bathroom that you will recognise from all the selfies I take in there.

Sober Sal but that lady behind me... not so sure about that one...!
She looks like she's wearing a Sia wig.

Chandelierrrrrr

and for my mother who won't get the reference, here's Sia's big song: Chandelier
